The Maltese Dominicans
in the lands of the Mission
Long before the foundation of the Province, many Maltese Dominicans had left our islands to preach the gospels in distant lands. Already in 1553 Fr. Ambrose Buttigieg OP is known for his Missionary zeal, being eventually appointed Bishop and Apostolic Nuncio to the East. He was accompanied by two Dominicans: Anton and John-Matthew brothers Zahra. Anton also became Bishop. With the establishment of the Province the need and desire for monks to go to the Mission did not diminish. On the contrary, a desire for a Mission run by the Maltese Dominican Province led our brothers to Albanian shores
